Every two years the funding from the Houston J. and Florence A. Doswell endowment at Texas Woman’s University supports a conference linked with teaching excellence in nursing. The endowed chair in nursing for teaching excellence has responsibility for planning and execution of this bi-annual conference. The 2018 conference identified factors that shape ideas about nursing education and the competencies needed for clinical practice. The conference focused on developing and sustaining nursing competencies. Dr. Julian G. Sebastian, Dean and Professor of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Nursing spoke about Third Order Change. Dr. Kathryn Shaffer, Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives and Innovation at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA spoke on the topic Change Isn’t Easy, but Necessary: Nursing Education to Meet Health Care Needs in the 21st Century.

- Discuss ways multi-generational nurses need to communicate and collaborate in changing workplace environments.
- Describe 2 – 3 changes in the NCLEX – RN exam expected to occur in the next few years.
- Explain ways grit and resilience reflect opportunities for student learning and professional growth.
